Just dial *449*1# to activate the 500mb data and *449*2# to activate the 1Gb data.
You will receive a message that you have successfully activated your free data.

If you don't receive any of the above messages from Mtn on whether you have being giving any of the data.

First dial *449# and choose either 1 or 2 depending on the free data you want to activate.
